AD8318 is a demodulation logarithmic amplifier, which can accurately convert the RF input signal to the corresponding dB scale output voltage. For 1MHz to 6GHz signals, it can maintain accurate logarithmic consistency and work at a maximum of 8GHz.

Module description


    The typical value of the AD8318 input range is 60dB (re:50), and the error is less than ±1dB. The AD8318 has a response time of 10ns and can detect RF bursts above 45MHz. Under ambient temperature conditions, the device has good log intercept stability. The device also provides a temperature sensor output with a slope of 2mV°C for other system monitoring. Requires 5V single power supply. Typical current consumption is 68mA. When the device is disabled, power consumption drops to <1.5mW.

    The AD8318 can be configured to provide a control voltage to a VGA such as a power amplifier, or to provide a measurement output from the VOUT pin. Because the output can be used for controller applications, the broadband noise is extremely low. In this mode, the setpoint control voltage acts on the VSET pin. The feedback loop through the RF amplifier is closed by VOUT, and its output adjusts the output of the amplifier to a magnitude corresponding to VSET.
    AD8318 can provide 0V to 49 output through the VOUT pin, suitable for controller applications. As a measuring device, the OUT pin is externally connected to VSET to generate the output voltage VOUT, which is a linear dB function of the RF input signal amplitude. The nominal value of the logarithmic slope is -25mvdB, but it can be adjusted by adjusting the feedback voltage of VOUT to the VSET interface. When using NH input, the intercept is 20dBm (re:500CW input). These parameters are very stable and do not change with power supply voltage and temperature fluctuations





Precautions for using the module


(1) The maximum input power of the detector module is +20dBm. The dynamic range of the detector is 85dB, and there are actual measurements to see that non-linearity starts to appear when it is greater than -5dBm.

(2) The module has no reverse connection and no current limiting protection. When using the module, be careful not to reverse the connection, otherwise the chip or module will be easily damaged.
(3) The module is a low-power module, and the power supply does not exceed 5.5V.
(4) Since the module is a high-precision device, in order to avoid unnecessary interference, it is recommended to use a linear power supply.
(5) It is recommended to use the SMA interface for the input signal. Poor contact or poor quality wires may cause signal attenuation or excessive noise, making the measurement inaccurate.
(6) The response and dynamic range of the detector module at different frequencies will be different, and there are differences between different modules, which is normal and not a problem of the module



Frequently asked questions


Q: Is there no response when measuring pulse power? The output is a straight line.


A: The default function of the module is power detection. It cannot detect pulse or instantaneous power. You need to change the C7 capacitor to a small capacitor value to detect pulse and instantaneous power. Generally, the higher the instantaneous requirements, the C7 capacitor should be small enough.


Q: I bought 3 modules, but the output voltage of the same test condition is different. Is this normal?


A: There are individual differences between the modules. The actual measured details are typical data, and the specific parameters have been measured.


Q: Can I do fast detection or demodulation?


A: With the C7 capacitor removed, fast detection or demodulation can be done.
