AD8361 is a mean response power detector, which is suitable for high frequency receiver and transmitter signal chain up to 2.5 GHz. The device is very simple to use. In most applications, only 2.7V to 5.5V single power supply, power decoupling capacitor and input coupling capacitor are needed to work.

The output of AD8361 is linear response to DC voltage, and the conversion gain is 7.5V/V root mean square. An external filter capacitor can be added to increase the average time constant. The AD8361 is mainly used for true power measurement of simple and composite waveforms, and is particularly suitable for measuring high crest factor (high peak-to-root-mean-square ratio) signals, such as CDMA and W-CDMA.
The AD8361 has three operating modes and supports a variety of analog-to-digital converter requirements:
1. The ground mode of the reference voltage source, the source is zero.
2. The internal reference voltage source mode can bias the output to 350mV above the low level.
3. Provide reference voltage source mode, which can bias the output to VS/7.5.
The AD8361 has an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and is available in 8-lead MSOP and 6-lead SOT-23 packages. It is manufactured using a proprietary high-fT silicon bipolar process.
Precautions for using the module
(1) The maximum input power of the detector module is +5dBm, and the dynamic range of the detector is 30dB.
(2) The module has no reverse connection and unlimited current protection. When using the module, be careful not to reverse the connection, otherwise the chip or module may be damaged.
(3) The module is a low-power module, and the power supply does not exceed 5.5V.
(4) Since the module is a high-precision device, in order to avoid unnecessary interference, it is recommended to use a linear power supply.
(5) It is recommended to use the SMA interface for the input signal. Poor contact or poor quality wires may cause signal attenuation or excessive noise, making the measurement inaccurate.
(6) The response and dynamic range of the detector module at different frequencies will be different, and there are differences between different modules, which is normal and not a problem of the module

AD8361 has three working modes. Support multiple ADC requirements
1. Reference Voltage Source Grounding Mode with Zero Source
2. Internal reference voltage source mode. The output can be biased to 350 mV above the ground level.
3. Providing the reference voltage source mode, the output can be biased to VS/7.5AD8361 working temperature norm of 40 °C~85 °C, using 8-pin MSOP and 6-pin ST-23 package. It is manufactured by a proprietary bipolar process of high-grade silicon.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Is there no response when measuring pulse power? The output is a straight line.
A: The default function of the module is power detection. It cannot detect pulse or instantaneous power. You need to change the C3 capacitor to a small capacitor value to detect pulse and instantaneous power. Generally, the higher the instantaneous requirements, the C3 capacitor can be removed.
Q: I bought 3 modules, but the output voltage of the same test condition is different. Is this normal?
A: There are individual differences between the modules. The actual measured details are typical data, and the specific parameters have been measured.
Q: Can I do fast detection or demodulation?
A: With the C3 capacitor removed, fast detection or demodulation can be done.
